Being avid fishermen and outdoor enthusiasts, Minnesota-based Ice Dam Guys® love spending time in Sawyer County! We’ve visited the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame more than once and enjoy trolling the Namekagon for trout. However, it’s not our shared appreciation for fish and fishing that has us here each winter – no-no, we’re here because of ice dams.
It’s no surprise homeowners in Hayward and throughout Sawyer County experience ice dams, as the region is particularly inviting for this specific type of nuisance. You average over 5 feet of snow each year with consistent below-freezing temperatures for several months! This type of snowscape can produce ice dams that are similar (or much much worse!) to the one below:
As you can see in the example, ice dams form right on your roof’s eaves and gutters. While this specific example is pretty clear to spot, normally, it’ll be more difficult thanks to receiving sustained snowfall. That snow helps conceal them, but like a stomach ache, they’re still brewing below and a bottle of Pepto-Bismol won’t help ya!
The reason these form and become so destructive is because of fluctuating temperatures that heat the roof’s surface enough to cause temporary thawing. This can be due to a particularly sunny and warm day, which is hard to control because of the whole “we’re not God” thing. However, many homeowners also experience ice dams because of unnatural heat loss from their homes into their attics.
Interior heat loss can usually be attributed to poor attic ventilation, attic bypasses (recessed lighting, attic hatches, HVAC ducts, etc), or having inferior insulation that’s too low an R-Value. No matter the reason your attic is too warm, it causes the snow and ice on the surface to warm from below. This is bad because that warmth keeps the snow melting but as it runs down your roof it eventually finds the eaves and gutters. Guess what? Eaves and gutters don’t have insulation as they’re on the exterior and overhanging portion of your roof. So while the majority of your roof is experiencing its own version of hot flashes, the eaves are still frozen. When that snowmelt reaches them, instead of finding the gutter to continue its exodus, they dam up and re-freeze. And that my friends are how you make ice dams – two parts bad luck and one part weather. We’re visual learners, so we included a picture to show this:
If you see anything that resembles what we’ve discussed above, you definitely have an ice dam and we’ll want to get that off your home ASAP! Neglecting to remove one can cause ceiling leaks and collapses or spiral into much harsher home damages.
Steam-Only Ice Dam Removal in Sawyer County
The Ice Dam Guys® have been removing ice dams since 1995 and we’ve become the top-rated ice dam removal company in America (seriously, check it out)! Over the last 25+ years, we’ve learned a thing or two about ice dams. OK, that’s not entirely true, we actually learned one thing really clearly – steam is the only safe and effective way to remove ice dams. In fact, steam-only ice dam removal is the only method we use and it’s because it has worked flawlessly for thousands of happy customers!
We see all sorts of ill-advised attempts at ice dam removal, usually from some roofing contractor trying to earn some beer money in the slow season. The most common, and problematic, include hot water pressure washers, ice picks and other blunt objects, or large quantities of ice melt. Pressure washers are just far too violent and overkill for the situation on your roof. Ice picks and blunt objects can easily damage your roof. Likewise, large volumes of ice melt eventually become corrosive fluid that will literally drip and pool on your siding and concrete. All of these outcomes pose risks and damage to your expensive roof, siding, and hardscapes.
Conversely, our approach, steam-only ice dam removal, is far more gentle and safe. As the name implies, we simply use an augmented device we call Steamzilla™ (yeah that’s right, we trademarked it!) and it disperses hot steam directly on your ice dam. This allows our technician the opportunity to take a solid chunk of ice and dice it into small pieces we can easily remove. What you’re left with is an ice-free roof, gutters that are flowing, and no additional damages from our help! You can see one of our technicians performing this steam-only ice dam removal below:
