“Colorful” is an appropriate nickname for a state like Colorado that has such an abundance of diverse landscapes and outdoor destinations. Colorado Springs is no different – from Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak to the eclectic Manitou Springs, the region has something for everyone! That said, when we’re in town, Colorado is just various shades of white thanks to Colorado Springs getting nearly 5 feet of snow annually. In addition to the snow, what really impacts your winters are the freezing temperatures that come with your storms. When those factors are combined and your strong Colorado sun makes an appearance, many homeowners can experience ice dams like the one below:

The telltale signs you have an ice dam on your roof are when you see a sheet of ice atop your roof’s shingles and large segments of icicles coming off your gutters. In the example above, we have both, and that’s exactly what you don’t want for Christmas. As you can see, that slab of ice could easily weigh hundreds (if not 1,000+) pounds! Having that much weight on the roof’s overhangs is just asking for trouble, but many times, it’s just an unfortunate byproduct of the season.

While Colorado Springs isn’t known as the snowiest place we work (Vail takes the cake there), many north-facing homes in Colorado will experience ice dams and frozen downspouts even in the mildest of storms. This is because Colorado remains very cold month after month and those northern faces just don’t see any sun for the entirety of winter. As an example, we’ve had to visit a customer way out in the high plains of Elbert County due to parts of their home remaining in the shade. It’s a crapshoot on which homes and areas will have ice dams, but if you see one, it’s something you need to address right away!

Usually, during the peak of a storm, you should be safe from ice dams. However, when that strong Mile High sun pokes out and begins to warm portions of your roof, that’s when you need to be alert. Ice dams can also form when there are unnatural fluctuations to the surface of the roof that can commonly be attributed to heat loss from your home into your attic. Both situations result in a portion of the roof’s surface warming so much that it thaws the snow. However, as snowmelt trickles down to the overhanging portions and gutters, it’ll refreeze without being able to escape. This is because the overhangs are not insulated like the rest of your home, so they don’t warm as effectively in the sun. Likewise, they aren’t impacted by internal heat loss into the attic because they’re separate from it. If you add in north-facing pockets of shade, there’s no chance the snowmelt can get past the frozen dams. When the below-freezing temperatures return in the late afternoon, all that pooled water will refreeze and you’ll have an ice dam. Rinse and repeat a couple more times and you’re left with something too big to address on your own, which is when we come in!

Steam-Only Ice Dam Removal Teller and El Paso Counties

The Ice Dam Guys® have been removing ice dams from frozen roofs across America since 1995! When we began, the industry wasn’t what it is today, so most homeowners had to rely on available roofing contractors to give it their best shot. Unfortunately, many times these adventurous souls didn’t know what they were doing and regularly used hot water power washers, ice picks, steel shovels, and even flames to attack ice dams. As you can imagine, those options can have dire consequences in a number of ways.

Hot water power washers can shred and damage your shingles while putting more water on your roof. Brute-force tools such as ice picks, hammers, and steel shovels can easily damage your roof with a missed swing. Flames are just wrong on many levels… we can’t even understand that one. And finally, salt and ice melt often seem attractive because they can work at melting ice but they will also produce corrosive runoff that will negatively impact your concrete and home siding. Unfortunately, many contractors still use these methods and we can’t warn you enough about the potential damages they can produce. We never liked them and thought there had to be a better way, which is why we invented and trademarked our in-house beast, Steamzilla™!

Steam-only ice dam removal is the best option and it’s the only method we use. We’ve used it exclusively over the past decades and for thousands of customers with overwhelming and consistent satisfaction. It’s ridiculously gentle at protecting your home while being incredibly effective at removing the ice dams! Like a hot knife cutting through butter, you can see how our technician is able to safely and efficiently remove ice dams in the photo below:

When he started on that roof, it had a bank of ice along the entire front face of the home. He simply created a small patch to safely stand while he begins the process and next thing you know, he’s slicing and dicing the dam into smaller manageable chunks. Those pieces get tossed into your yard (which we clean up) and in a matter of time, he’s able to clear your roof, produce free-flowing gutters, and alleviate your headaches. It’s really that simple and direct!
