Known as the “Gateway to the Black Hills”, Rapid City and the surrounding areas have everything from renowned tourist destinations to local treasures. Historic Deadwood and the iconic Mt. Rushmore are just around the corner, while the Outdoor Campus and Canyon Lake Park are available for local fun! So long as you can handle the cold, even winters can be fairly generous for locals to enjoy the outdoors since you’re not known for heavy snowstorms. Considering you get most of your snowfall in March and April, winters here aren’t as impactful as they are in the Black Hills or further north in the state. That said, they can produce ice dams like the one you see below:

If you see something like that on your home or business, you have an ice dam and it’s in your best interest to address it sooner than later! This is because if left unattended, an ice dam can easily lead to interior damages such as ceiling collapses from water leaks or just water leaks. No matter if the ceiling collapses or not, water + leak is never a cheap combination for a homeowner to repair. Below is a photo we took from a customer’s home where they had an ice dam leak into their lighting above the table that got so wet it became compromised and fell out:

The reasons ice dams frequently lead to interior water leaks is based on their formation. When we experience a sustained storm with snowfall, it gathers on your roof without issues. However, later in the storm on a random afternoon of warm sunshine, that exposure to sunshine and a little heat begins to thaw portions of your roof. When those areas produce snowmelt it would typically runoff and exit via the gutters and downspouts, but today it gets jammed up behind them. This is because the gutters and downspouts are usually the last areas of your roof and home to thaw. Gutters are on the overhangs, which don’t have insulation like the rest of your roof. During winter, that means they are exposed to freezing temperatures both above and below. Downspouts can remain frozen simply because they aren’t exposed to the sun directly or they’re oftentimes tucked into corners of homes where there’s perpetual shade. Similarly, north-facing portions of your roof will also remain frozen longer.

There’s another way ice dams form and that’s through interior heat loss that’s caused by attic bypasses. In this circumstance, you have a warm home that has some defects in its armor somewhere. This could be recessed lighting, vents, inadequate insulation, or more. Whatever reason, warm air from your living quarters sneaks into the attic where it artificially warms the roof from below. This allows the snow above to thaw but when it reaches another portion of the roof that doesn’t have heat loss it will refreeze. Wouldn’t you know it, that’s usually at the overhanging gutters too!

Both of these scenarios lead to water being trapped on your roof and if it’s not frozen it’ll try to find places to go. As you can assume, that’s usually inside. To avoid this, call a professional like us to remove it ASAP!

100% Safe Steam-Only Ice Dam Removal in Custer, Meade, and Pennington Counties, South Dakota

The Ice Dam Guys® have been removing ice dams across America since 1995! Prior to our arrival, most homeowners were left to fight ice dams with an ice pick, a shovel, or some salt. You could call a contractor for help, but they’d likely use the same or try to incorporate a power washer. While all those methods may have good intentions behind them, the reality is that they all damage your roof and can cause additional problems.

Blunt objects damage shingles and wood, salt produces a corrosive byproduct that can harm your concrete and siding, while power washers are just too aggressive and require more water to be added to your roof! Being the perfectionists that we are, we thought there had to be a better way and there was! It just took us some time to fine-tune our vision, but we eventually invented Steamzilla™! Ol’ Steamy literally uses nothing but steam to remove your ice dams. Steam-only ice dam removal is 100% safe for your home and it’s phenomenal at cutting through ice like a hot knife to butter.

Our tech will arrive at your house and speak with you about your ice dams. Once they’ve identified them, they’ll climb up atop your roof and slowly walk the perimeter of your home’s gutters and low points. In each area, they’ll ensure the gutters are free-flowing and the roof is ice-free. To help you visualize this, here’s an example of one of our techs at work:
