Known as the gateway to Snake River Canyon, Twin Falls is an idyllic blend of natural attractions and suburban conveniences. Most of the time, this is the best of both worlds, as Twin Falls doesn’t get as aggressive weather as northern Idaho. However, on occasion, the region can get hammered no different than you would up north in Post Falls! These storms most frequently occur between December and February when you receive 2/3 of your annual snowfall. It’s also during this timeframe that your home will get ice dams, such as the example we found below:
As you can see, ice dams form at your home’s gutters, in sections that are north-facing with little or no sunlight, or in places where snow melt from different sections of your roof are funneled into one place. No matter where the ice dam is on your roof, you want to be mindful of them forming, because they can be quite destructive. We’re not here to spread fake news, so we won’t say that property damage occurs every time an ice dam is formed, but damages absolutely happen and they happen annually. Most frequently, we hear from homeowners who are alerted to their ice dam when they awake to find portions of their ceiling collapsing or leaking water. Here’s an example we took from a customer’s home:
While not as damaging as a tree falling on your roof or experiencing a home fire, water leaks like this are a major pain to repair and they become quite expensive. This is because the water usually runs through your attic’s insulation, various internal home components such as electrical, and of course, the sheetrock and aesthetics. If you don’t catch it in time, many of these wet areas could need monitoring for mold or even mold remediation.
The reason water leaks are common with ice dams is due to the anatomy of an ice dam. Simply put, ice dams occur when there are unnatural temperature fluctuations on your roof. One way this happens is when the sun appears for several hours beating down on your roof. Another way is when you lose interior heat from your living spaces into your attic via “attic bypasses”, which warms the roof from below. Both of these situations will essentially cause “flash thawing” for a couple of hours but that will quickly stop when the evening’s freezing temperatures return. It’s at this time an ice dam forms because the snowmelt refreezes as a dam. Freezing also happens to the entire downspouts and most of the gutters too, so when the ice tries to thaw the next time, it has little opportunity to escape via traditional routes. At this point it’s trapped and pooling, which has to go somewhere, and oftentimes that “somewhere” is inside your home. Not fun right? That’s where we come in!
100% Safe Steam-Only Ice Dam Removal in Jerome and Twin Falls Counties
The Ice Dam Guys® has been the leading ice dam removal company in America since 1995! Like Evel Knievel attempted at the Snake River Canyon with his steam-powered rocket bike, we also love steam! So much so that we changed the industry when we created our in-house ice dam removal machine that’s known as Steamzilla™! We are so confident in our steam-only application because it’s the best option for ice dam removal and it’s what we’ve used for decades! Steam allows for 100% safe ice dam removal and it’s incredibly effective! This allows us to be up and down your roof in a matter of hours. Unfortunately, not the entire industry followed our lead.
Many ice dam removal contractors are simply summer roofers looking to make some money during their slow season. These contractors are likely well-intentioned, but most lack the depth of familiarity we have. It’s not their fault, as we’ve literally been on hundreds of roofs, sometimes thousands, each year since 1995. It’s hard to replicate that type of muscle memory, but where we want you to exercise additional caution is if your contractor suggests anything other than steam for their removal process. We’re not making this up, many outfits use damaging tools such as water power washers, ice picks, shovels, hammers, and even flame to remove their ice dams. Each of those options has more of an opportunity to damage your home than our 100% safe steam-only approach. We also advise against salt and ice melts, because while they can melt ice, they will regularly produce a corrosive byproduct that can damage your home’s siding and concrete. You’ve likely seen this before on a sidewalk outside a business when their concrete is crumbling apart. You don’t want that at your home!
We’re visual learners, so we thought it would be good to show you one of our technicians on a customer’s roof using steam to remove the ice dam:
When he arrived at the home, the roof had a bank of ice along the entire front face of the home. He simply cleared a small landing in the snow atop the ladder to safely stand while he begins the process and next thing you know, he’s going to work. Like a hot knife through butter, the steam dices the ice dam into handheld pieces that we clear from your roof and ensure no ice remains. Once we know you’re safe from future ice dams and have free-flowing gutters, we call it a day and head to your neighbor’s house. It’s really that simple!
